Step 2 - Configuring OMS for your
MIDI Setup
The OMS installer will have placed on your hard disk a folder called “Opcode”
in which will be another folder called “OMS Applications”. In this folder is
the application “OMS Setup”. Run this to configure OMS.
If AppleTalk is on you will be shown the following window:
AppleTalk will not always degrade your MIDI system, especially in an ethernet
network. Since MIDI timing is not critical in Auralia, you should be able to
leave AppleTalk on. AppleTalk must be left on if you are using the powerful
network capabilities of Auralia.
So you will not be presented with this window each time you run Auralia, click
on the Options... button. You will be presented with the following window:
Click on the check boxes so that they appear as in the above picture in click
on OK. You will then be shown the following window:
Click on OK to have OMS assist you in configuring your MIDI setup.
The first window to appear asks you which computer ports to search for MIDI
interfaces. The following example assumes there is a Roland Sound Canvas MIDI
module connected to the modem port:
Select which ports you want to have OMS search for a MIDI interface and click
Search.
After searching the ports, OMS will present you with a window showing what
MIDI interfaces it has found, similar to the following:
The important point here is the second line showing that OMS has found a standard
MIDI interface connected to the modem port.
If your interface does not appear in the list, check that they are switched
on (if they need power). You can select Customize if you want more control over
what OMS looks for. Select Troubleshoot if you need more help.
When the list correctly identifies your MIDI setup, switch on your synthesiser
and click on OK. OMS now tries to automatically identify your synthesiser and
shows the following window:
The last line in the list shows that OMS found a synthesiser connected to the
modem port MIDI interface but could not identify it. You can set this up later.
Click on OK to continue. You will be prompted to save your setup with the standard
Macintosh window:
The following window that appears is a graphical representation of your MIDI
system:
Double-click on the keyboard icon with the red question mark. This produces
a window where you can tell OMS about your synthesiser:
Select the manufacturer and model in the popup menus and give the synthesiser
a name in the space provided. If your synthesiser is not in the list and is
a General MIDI device (which is must be for Auralia to work correctly), select
the options so they appear as above.
Click on OK to save your changes. Your OMS setup is complete.
Testing
your OMS Setup
The OMS Setup program includes a test function. Select Test Studio from the
Studio menu. The cursor will change to a notehead. You can click this on the
icon for your synthesiser which will send notes to your synthesiser. Check you
can hear notes from your synthesiser to be sure that OMS is working with your
setup. If you can’t hear notes then check that the synthesiser is powered on
as are any MIDI interfaces. Finally quit the OMS Setup program, saving any changes
where prompted.
